The Karen people, originally from Myanmar, experienced extreme violence and poverty and were forced to leave their homes shortly after World War II. Crossing into Thailand, the Karen people made new homes at refugee camps along the border. This left the majority of Karen children without access to education and seeking community; as a response The Thoo Mweh Khee Migrant Learning Center was founded in 2002.

Girls for Girls NYC is grateful to have been welcomed into the beautiful community of Thoo Mweh Khee. In addition to facilitating drama classes and female development workshops, Girls 4 Girls NYC teaching artists have become part of the Thoo Mweh Khee Family.

I’ve always believed that when you educate a girl, you empower a nation.
